Industrial robotics glossary
Palletizing Robot
A robot that stacks cases, bags, or cartons onto pallets using pattern software.
Collaborative Palletizing Robot
A cobot-based palletizing cell that shares space with operators under ISO/TS 15066, ideal for high-mix, small-batch palletizing.
Palletizing Pattern
The stacking layout for a pallet, including layer count, orientation, and interlocking. Generated by palletizing software.
Depalletizing
Removing cases, bags, or cartons from a pallet, often the reverse of palletizing. Requires 3D vision for mixed layers.
Vacuum Gripper
An end effector using suction cups to pick cartons, bags, or panels. Common in palletizing and depalletizing.
Tool Changer
A quick-change device that lets a robot switch grippers or tools automatically. Critical for multi-SKU palletizing.
Harmonic Drive
A compact, zero-backlash gear reducer used in robot joints. Common in collaborative and palletizing robots.
RV Reducer
A high-rigidity cycloidal reducer for heavy payload robot joints. Often used in palletizing robots.
Servo Drive
The power and control unit for a servo motor. Determines robot speed, torque, and positioning accuracy.
Encoder
A sensor that reports joint position and speed. Essential for repeatability and closed-loop robot control.
Force Torque Sensor
A sensor at the wrist that measures force and torque. Used for precision insertion and collaborative palletizing.
Safety PLC
A fail-safe controller that monitors e-stops, light curtains, and safety gates. Required for palletizing cells.
I/O Module
An interface module that connects sensors, valves, and PLC signals to the robot controller. Key for cell integration.
3D Vision Camera
A camera that captures depth data for pallet detection, box dimensioning, and mixed-SKU depalletizing.
